Foundation chief to step down after 23 years with the charity

The chief executive of The Rank Foundation is to step down after 23 years with the charity.

David Sanderson, who joined the charity in 2002 as director of grants and special projects, before becoming chief executive in 2011, will be succeeded by Caroline Broadhurst, the charity’s deputy chief.

Broadhurst was director of community care projects at Rank from 2006 before being promoted to deputy chief in 2014.

The charity said Sanderson, who previously spent 24 years in the British Army, planned to take some time out and travel before returning to the philanthropic sector as a consultant and adviser.

The Rank Foundation, which was founded by the film-maker Arthur Rank in 1953, works in communities to encourage leaders, develop entrepreneurial mindsets and form strong networks to tackle society’s challenges.

The charity said that under Sanderson’s leadership, it had moved “beyond traditional grant-making to embrace a model rooted in relationship-based philanthropy”, which had become a defining feature of its work.

Will Wyatt, chair of the foundation, said: “David’s leadership has been instrumental in shaping the foundation that exists today.

“His legacy is one of innovation, collaboration and a relentless focus on mission for impact. We thank him for his outstanding service and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Sanderson said the charity today was “scarcely recognisable” from the organisation he joined.

“We’ve developed strategies, programmes and partnerships that enable our network of social sector leaders to deliver meaningful, long-term change,” he said.

“It’s been an honour to be part of this transformation and my privilege to have built relationships with leaders across the UK who know they can rely on The Rank Foundation and its thriving network for support.”

Speaking about Broadhurst, Sanderson said: “Caroline’s exceptional leadership and vision will take The Rank Foundation to new heights.

“Her deep understanding of our work and her commitment to our values make her the ideal choice to lead the next chapter.”
