Hospice charity to host zipline in heritage city as part of ‘innovative’ fundraiser

A Wiltshire-based hospice is setting up a zipline through Bath’s Royal Crescent to raise funds.

The zipline will be in place from 28 February to 2 March on the lower lawn of Bath’s Royal Crescent to fundraise for Dorothy House Hospice Care.

The charity said the initiative was the “first event of its kind” in Bath and will raise awareness of the hospice’s important role in supporting patients and families in the community.

Participants will pay a £35 registration fee and are being asked to raise £150 before taking part, which the charity said could fund either two support group sessions for young adults with life-limiting illnesses or a morning of care provided by a community nurse specialist.

During the event, the charity will also host a range of activities on the Royal Crescent Lawn and around the city of Bath, which was designated a world heritage site in 1987. These will include a pop-up charity shop.

On the event page, the charity said it was seeking “new and innovative ways to fundraise” due to the plight of UK hospices, the finances of which were “worse than they have been for 20 years”.

It said that with end-of-life services being cut and just 30 per cent of the charity’s funding coming from the NHS, it was more vital than ever for the community to understand the services offered by the hospice.

The charity added: “The National Insurance changes announced in the recent budget will cost Dorothy House Hospice Care, who provide specialist care to over 3,000 people every year, an additional £422,000 per year.”
