Theatre charity closes after losing Arts Council England funding

An arts charity has closed due to financial issues following the loss of funding from Arts Council England.

Freedom Studios, based in Bradford, was established in 2007 as a writing theatre company and celebrated the voices of south Asian and ethnically diverse people, young people and working class communities.

In 2023, Freedom Studios lost its place on the Arts Council England national portfolio, which negatively affected its finances, the charity said.

Despite this challenge, the charity managed to raise new funds to continue to successfully deliver impactful programmes including Bradford Voices,” the charity said.

“However, Freedom Studios struggled to secure new funding in this precarious climate, threatening its solvency.

“The trustees have taken the extremely difficult decision to begin winding down the charity in an orderly fashion.”

The charity said it anticipated this work will continue until the end of the current financial year.

Freedom Studios had an income of £158,561 in the year to the end of March 2023, of which £143,720 came from ACE, its accounts show. It employed three people and spent £126,665 over the same period.>

“Our original mission to pioneer the voice of our communities through plays, new writing and co-creation remains as important as ever,” the charity said.

“We leave a hole in the sector which sadly lacks new writing and talent development opportunities, and hope there is the opportunity for others to take up this space in our stead.”
