A UK-based relief charity has changed its name following an agreement with a Somali charity to support people in the east African country.
Somali Relief and Development Forum has been rebranded to become Zamzam Foundation UK.
Founded in 2011, SRDF’s aim is to bring together UK Somali diaspora organisations.
The charity came to a partnership agreement with the Zamzam Foundation in 2023 and changed its name to Zamzam Foundation UK last week.
Zamzam Foundation UK said the change would make it easier for British Muslims and the Somali diaspora to support those living in some of the most challenging conditions in Somalia.
The change includes a new website and social media channels that will help share news of Somalia aid programmes and accept donations from the UK public, the charity said.
Tahir Tahir, chair of Zamzam Foundation UK, said: “For Somali diaspora communities and the wider public in the UK, donating to Zamzam UK is a straightforward and effective way to support what Zamzam in Somalia is doing to build a brighter future for our homeland.
“For people living in poverty across Somalia, I hope Zamzam UK will become a significant source of hope and support for many years to come.”
The charity said its work in the UK would provide funds to build a brighter future for Somali people through its support for orphans, funding of new schools, livelihood grants and peacebuilding projects, alongside its emergency aid work.
Omar Jama, executive director of Zamzam Foundation, said: “I am delighted that the partnership we have formed in the UK with the Somali Relief and Development Forum is enabling SRDF to raise awareness and raise funds in the UK as Zamzam Foundation UK.”
