Daniel Craig Approves of Chappell Roan Setting Boundaries: “Celebrity Kills You”

Daniel Craig has voiced support for Chappell Roan, whose massive rise to stardom has raised a great deal of questions around fandom and the lack of boundaries that come with fame.

Roan took multiple opportunities over the summer to condemn certain fans for behavior she deemed as “creepy” and “invasive,” citing the fact that superfans have gone so far as visiting her sister at her job, calling her dad on the phone, chasing her at the airport, and plenty more privacy violations.

“I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little famous,” Roan said in a TikTok this summer. “That does not make it okay. That doesn’t make it normal.”

Craig, who is currently promoting his starring role in Luca Guadagnino’s new film Queer, discussed his admiration for Roan and her comments in a new interview with The New York Times. “I really admire the guts to say those things,” Craig said. “Celebrity kills you. Really, it’s a terrible, terrible thing that can happen and I think you’ve got to really fight against all of the things that it throws in your face, because it’s so easy to be tempted.”

He continued, saying, “Generating and maintaining that brand is about how much exposure you have” and wondering if he’s viewed as more of a brand than an actor these days. “Am I a brand? You have to do social media, and I can’t do that. I even regret emails I send.”

Elsewhere in his profile with The New York Times, Craig discussed the vulnerability needed for his role in Queer, which required him to dive deeper into the language behind masculinity and sexuality. “Sex is surrender,” Craig said, “That’s what it really boils down to, that’s where real connection is made.” He maintains that Queer is not just about the racy sequences, but the power and emotion behind them: “Of course there is lust involved — full-on, dirty lust — but it’s also someone looking for love at a time when everything must have been so complicated.”

Queer arrives in theaters on November 27th. As for Chappell Roan, she recently received six Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year. Revisit our 2023 CoSign interview with Roan.
