Carers support charity to close

A carers support charity has announced its closure due to “severe ongoing financial challenges” that have made it impossible to continue operations.

Southend Carers has provided information, advice and support to carers in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, for almost 23 years.

The charity said it has been unable to secure the necessary funding to continue operating, despite its best efforts and will close on 30 July.

“We understand that this news will be difficult for you to hear, and we want to assure you that we have exhausted all possible options to avoid this outcome,” it said.

Southend Carers’ latest accounts, for the latest financial year ending 31 March 2023, show the charity had eight full-time employees.

The charity recorded income of £79,242 in 2022/23, down from £214,617 in the previous year.

Southend Carers said it would work with local organisations and partners to provide information and assistance regarding alternative services that can offer support.

“We will keep our website and social media up to date with those details,” the charity said.

Daryl King, chair of Southend Carers, thanked supporters and staff for their “enthusiasm, dedication, creativity and innovation”.

King said: “We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the incredible staff we have been so lucky to have had working with us, some for many years.

“While this chapter is coming to an end, we hope that the spirit of Southend Carers will continue to live on through the countless lives we have touched.

“We are proud of the difference we have made together and remain hopeful for a future where the needs of unpaid carers in our community are met with compassion and care.”
