Cancer charity chief to step down

Judi Rhys is stepping down as chief executive of Tenovus Cancer Care after more than five years in the role, the charity has announced.

Rhys is expected to leave the Wales-based cancer support charity at the end of the year. The process of recruiting her successor is due to begin next month (August) and she is expected to stay on until they have joined.

The charity said she plans to explore further opportunities and focus on her non-executive roles.

Rhys, who has more than 18 years’ experience in senior charity sector roles, previously held chief executive roles at Arthritis Care, British Liver Trust and Cancer Research Wales.

In 2021, she was appointed MBE for her work in the voluntary sector.

It’s been an absolute privilege to lead Tenovus Cancer Care through extraordinary times,” said Rhys.

“The opportunity to work alongside people affected by cancer and witness the dedication and generosity of our volunteers and supporters has been truly amazing and inspiring.

“I’m immensely proud of everything we’ve achieved together and the difference we’re making to the lives of so many people affected by cancer.

“Sadly, there remains a huge amount of work to do to improve outcomes across Wales. But I’m confident a new leader can build on our strong foundations and continue to drive our mission forward.”

The charity said Rhys had tirelessly campaigned to tackle inequalities and improve outcomes for everyone affected by cancer across Wales.
