In the first season of Boots Riley’s provocative new Prime Video series I’m A Virgo, the stars seem to align for the 13-foot-tall giant Cootie (Jharrel Jerome) as he ventures out from his home in Oakland for the first time in his life, only to discover new friends, new love (in the form of a burger cook named Flora), and a growing movement for justice in his neighborhood. But the inequity sown on behalf of The Hero (Walton Goggins)—a superhero who acts unilaterally to “eliminate” crime and corruption—creates lingering repercussions (and lingering pain) in Cootie’s new life of adventure. Season 1 ends with a thrilling tease of what dangers might lie ahead, should Prime Video opt for another chapter of Cootie and Co. Here’s what we know about the possibility so far.
Will there be a season 2 of I’m A Virgo?
Everyone sure seems to hope so, but no official announcement has been made just yet.
Asked specifically about the possibility of a second season, I’m A Virgo executive producer Michael Ellenberg told The Hollywood Reporter, “We are certainly hoping for one and aiming for one, but it’s too early to tell. But it is built to go on. It’s a mystical Oakland and there are many things we said that have paid off, and there are many things we said that haven’t paid off. And we hope to get the opportunity to do so.”
Similarly, actor Jerome told Collider, “Boots knows how to fit so many conversations into one, but there a lot of conversations that, by the end of episode seven, are left unfinished. I think it would be exciting to see a continuation of the story, and I think that the world will agree, after watching the season.”
When will season 2 come out?
The timeline is difficult to predict, especially since I’m A Virgo has yet to get the green light for season 2. Ellenberg first approached Riley about developing a series after seeing the director’s film Sorry to Bother You at Sundance Film Festival in January 2018, which means the first season took five years to bring to life. But making a second season of an already-developed show is (usually) a speedier process than creating a whole series from scratch.
Who will be in the cast?
Most of the cast and crew is expected to return should a season 2 come about—including Riley, Jerome, and fellow actors including Goggins, Brett Gray, Kara Young, Olivia Washington, Mike Epps, Carmen Ejogo, and more.
What will season 2 be about?
The minds behind I’m A Virgo are keeping their lips sealed regarding any specific details about the continuing story, but we can be sure Cootie’s frightening rash—which he contracted from his Asphalt Royalty clothing deal—will play a part. Jerome told The Hollywood Reporter, “The rash is definitely a point, but unfortunately, if I say something about it, it is going to kind of ruin the possible continuation of the story. I think the suspense is purposeful. And Boots leaving you on that note of well, what is going on there? is very purposeful.”
And to a question about Cootie’s adoptive parents, Ellenberg told The Hollywood Reporter, “If there is more story to tell, we’ll learn a whole lot more in the future. That’s all I can say about that.”
In an interview with ELLE.com, Olivia Washington expressed her own hope for a second season, but demurred when it came to creative input. “Boots Riley is one of the most creative people I’ve ever worked with,” she said. “So, who am I to say what he’s going to create [for Flora]? I would think too small. I mean, who knows where we will go? Where we pick up from? … I’m just so excited to continue to be in this world. I would love nothing more.”
