Major charity ‘sorry’ as bereaved supporters lose access to online memorials

A major charity has apologised to some of its supporters after they lost access to online memorials to loved ones.

Guide Dogs was among dozens of charities which used the services of The Online Book Company, which produced virtual books of remembrance for supporters and fundraisers.

But the firm faced a formal winding-up order in April, months after charities first reported that they were no longer able to contact the company.

The firm’s director, Jonathan Howard, died a year ago. The phone number provided on the firm’s website no longer works.

The books “are a great tool for fundraising”, according to a video on the company’s website.

A spokesperson for Guide Dogs said: “We have signposted bereaved supporters to the firm’s Guide Dogs-branded Book of Remembrance for the past 13 years and apologise to those whose memorials are no longer viewable because this third-party website became unavailable.”

They said that the charity was “looking at alternative providers” for the service in the future.
