Regulator probes charity after three-quarters of trustees walk out

Charity

The regulator is looking into “concerns” about a charity that works with military veterans.

The Charity Commission confirmed today that it had opened a compliance case into Forgotten Veterans UK, a Portsmouth-based organisation that supports former military personnel and their families.

Three of the charity’s four trustees have quit the board, according to reports today in The Sun newspaper.

Forgotten Veterans did not respond to a request for comment but the Charity Commission currently lists just one trustee on the charity’s board.

The regulator’s records also show that Forgotten Veterans filed its financial documents late in three of the past four years. This includes accounts for 2020/21, the most recent year required, which still have not been published eight months after they were due.

Forgotten Veterans has raised about £150,000 since 2017, mainly through selling merchandise on its website. It doubled its turnover between 2018/19 and 2019/20.

A Charity Commission told Third Sector: “We have opened a regulatory compliance case to assess concerns raised with us about Forgotten Veterans.”
