When it comes to improving women’s lives worldwide, it continues to be a work in progress involving multiple parties from organisations to governmental bodies and groups of passionate advocates. Women on a Mission (WOAM) Singapore is a non-profit organisation founded with the core objective of supporting and empowering women survivors of war and violence. To celebrate its recent expedition to Kyrgyzstan, WOAM is hosting a Charity Cocktail Reception & Photo Exhibition at the EHL Hospitality Business School Singapore Campus on 11 April 2023. The event will feature limited-edition prints from their journey across the Kyrgyz mountains and past expeditions.

At the upcoming charity event, guests will get the unique opportunity to learn about WOAM’s work and to support the organisation’s mission. During the last expedition in September 2022, a team of 12 women from WOAM travelled 156km in seven days, trekking through the picturesque snow-peaked mountains of the Tian Shan range near the border of China at an altitude of 3,000 to 4,000 metres. So far, close to US$60,000 has been raised to help some of the most marginalised women in the world, women survivors of war in Ukraine, Afghanistan and Syria through one of their charity partners, Women for Women International. The event’s goal is to raise another US$40,000 to reach the target of US$100,000.

Additionally, the Charity Cocktail Reception & Photo Exhibition will showcase the beauty of Kyrgyzstan and the strength of the women who undertake these expeditions, as well as highlight the importance of supporting women survivors of war and violence. WOAM has been elevating women’s lives for the past 11 years and has raised over US$1 million to support organisations that empower women worldwide. Some of the organisations that WOAM have supported and raised funds for over the years include International Justice Mission, UN Women, AWARE (Singapore’s leading gender equality advocacy group), and Pertapis Home for Women and Girls in Singapore. In the past decade, WOAM has undertaken expeditions to various regions such as the Himalayas, the Middle East, Africa, Mongolia, Southeast Asia, Central Asia, and the Arctic Circle.

Speaking more about WOAM, co-founder Christine Amour-Levar shares: “Through our efforts we want to reach out to the women who are often left behind — those who struggle with poverty and violence, who are denied basic education and health care, and whose lives have been devastated by conflict.”

WOAM Co-Founder Valerie Boffy adds, “By raising funds for Women for Women International, we hope to support women survivors of war around the world who have quite literally lost everything. With over twenty brutal armed conflicts across the globe and unprecedented levels of violence against women, there has never been a greater need to support such initiatives that change the world, one woman at a time.”
