Regulator’s probe to continue – despite charity’s closure

The Charity Commission will continue its compliance case into a Newcastle-based homelessness charity after the organisation announced its closure last month.

The commission opened the case into North East Homeless last November, after concerns about its governance.

The charity said at the time that it welcomed the scrutiny as an opportunity to correct “untruths” being spread about its work.

North East Homeless had been the subject of a series of claims made on social media about issues including bullying and unpaid wages.

The organisation started in 2014, after its founders, Brian and Emma Burridge, launched a one-off Facebook appeal to help homeless people in the region.

Most recently, it operated from a unit in Northumberland Street, North Shields, where it offered food, training and support, and had a café and social supermarket.

Brian Burridge, chief executive of NEH, stepped down in November, saying he wanted to prioritise his health and his family.

Burridge’s wife, Emma, replaced him as chief executive, but the charity announced her decision to step down citing health reasons the following month.

In a subsequent statement, the charity announced its closure, effective 24 December 2022, saying it had appointed Leonard Curtis Business Solutions Group to assist with its liquidation.

A Charity Commission spokesperson said: “There are a number of steps trustees must take when considering whether to close a charity.

“We are aware that the trustees of North East Homeless have appointed Leonard Curtis Business Solutions Group but we cannot comment further while our compliance case remains ongoing.”

The commission added that it had not found any wrongdoing at this time.
