New funding made available – with 10 days to apply

Youth charities in England have 10 days to apply for funding from a government-backed scheme helping young people access outdoor pursuits.

Projects funded through the Adventure Away from Home programme must then be delivered by the middle of April.

The fund, worth £470,000 in total, was launched yesterday.

The network body UK Youth, which is running the scheme, said there was no cap on the size of individual grants but that, “given the timescale”, it would prioritise applicants with proven capacity to deliver activities to the deadline.

The scheme is part of the government’s National Youth Guarantee, which was launched last year with the promise that “every young person right across England will have access to regular out-of-school activities, adventures away from home and opportunities to volunteer”.

Successful charities will receive a grant agreement at the start of March and will be sent funding within two weeks, according to the programme guide. Projects must then be delivered by 16 April.

David Watts, director of outdoor learning at UK Youth, said that “youth work and outdoor learning are essential tools to help young people navigate these uncertain times”.

The scheme aims to support “disadvantaged young people in their local community who are being impacted by a number of generational issues, such as the cost-of-living crisis, mental health concerns, a lack of employment opportunities and limited access to green spaces”, he added.
