The homelessness charity St Mungo’s has appointed a former senior civil servant as its new chief executive.

Emma Haddad starts at St Mungo’s today, and joins from the Home Office where she was director general for asylum and protection. She has also worked at the Department for Work and Pensions.

Haddad replaces Rebecca Sycamore, who had been interim chief executive since May following the death of Steve Douglas

Sycamore has returned to her previous role as St Mungo’s executive director of strategy and development.

Haddad said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be joining St Mungo’s.

“Its mission is hugely important to me and it will be a privilege to lead the organisation. In the current economic climate, the services and support we offer will be more vital than ever.”

In a video announcing her recruitment, she added that she was “looking forward to getting stuck in” to the job.

Joanna Killian, chair of trustees at St Mungo’s, welcomed Haddad and said: “Her knowledge and experience in supporting people who have been displaced and marginalised is very relevant to our role here in supporting the most vulnerable in society and she has a clear determination to end homelessness.”
