The Charity Commission has appointed interim managers to take over the running of Shire Way Community Association, six months after announcing a statutory inquiry into the charity.
SWCA has been left “unable to function” after all its trustees resigned following the announcement of the inquiry, the regulator said in a statement.
A spokesperson for the charity had previously told Third Sector that the board intended “to co-operate with the commission, and we look forward to showing them all the good work we have done and plan to continue doing for another 40 years”.
The inquiry, which began in January, was opened after SWCA failed to file accounts with the regulator for three years in a row. The commission then found evidence that the Gloucestershire charity had apparently been paying wages, despite previously stating that it had no members of staff.
The regulator said it was also looking into information regarding the identity of the charity’s trustees.
The interim managers, Charles Turner and Paul Barber from the insolvency specialists Begbies Traynor, will work to secure the charity’s assets and review whether the organisation is financially viable.
They will then either help put new governance arrangements in place so that SWCA can continue its work, or wind the charity up.
SWCA had an income of £95,000 and spent £106,000 in 2018/19, according to its latest accounts filed with the commission.
