Twitch tests charity fundraising tool

Charity

The live streaming website Twitch has launched a new feature to make charity fundraising easier on its platform.

The built-in Twitch Charity feature is designed to make it simpler for streamers to raise money for charity and easier for viewers to give, with a designated “donate to charity” button.

Twitch users have been able to run charity streams before the launch of the tool, but it required streamers to track donations, manage multiple applications and convert Twitch’s virtual currency, Bits.

The platform said in a blog yesterday that the new feature will make raising money for charities “as minimally hassle-y as possible”.

It added: “For streamers, it makes raising money for important causes easier and transparent.

“For viewers, it should make supporting those causes simpler, clearer, and more impactful.”

The streaming service said that a beta version of its new feature is now live for some streamers.

It added that it was rolling out the feature with “a limited amount of charities, but we’ll add many more soon”.

Donations will go directly to PayPal Giving Fund, before being sent to the designated charity.

Charities that want to get onto the platform need to enroll with PayPal Giving Fund and then log into a Twitch account to submit their charity for consideration on the platform’s charity nomination page.

Twitch will then review the nomination and add it to the platform if it is eligible.
