Obi-Wan Kenobi Trailer Reveals Ewan McGregor’s Older Return

Movies

The Obi-Wan Kenobi sizzle reel confirms an Obi-Wan vs. Darth Vader rematch via concept art. Ever since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, there have been rumors about Ewan McGregor returning to the franchise to play the Jedi once more. McGregor portrayed Obi-Wan in the prequel trilogy, becoming one of the most universally praised parts of those films. At one point, Lucasfilm was keen on making an Obi-Wan spinoff movie, but the project was later reworked into a TV miniseries for Disney+. Deborah Chow, known for helming episodes of The Mandalorian, is directing.

Other than confirmation Obi-Wan Kenobi is set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, little is known about the show’s story. Lucasfilm as assembled a star-studded cast around McGregor, including Hayden Christensen’s highly-anticipated return as Darth VaderObi-Wan Kenobi isn’t expected to premiere until some point in 2022, but viewers are eager to get a look at what Chow and company have in store. Now, the curtain’s been peeled back a bit.

Prior to Disney+ Day, Lucasfilm unveiled a short behind-the-scenes sizzle reel for Obi-Wan Kenobi. In the video, McGregor and Chow discuss their excitement about the show, with McGregor particularly calling attention to his reunion with Christensen. No actual footage was included in the clip, but there are glimpses of Obi-Wan Kenobi concept art. Watch the video below:

The video sheds a bit of light on the Obi-Wan Kenobi story, as Chow mentions the Empire is hunting down Jedi who have survived Order 66. This lends further credence to reports Sung Kang is portraying an Inquisitor on Obi-Wan Kenobi, and it will be interesting to learn more about the show’s villains as the marketing campaign revs up. It sounds like the galaxy will be a dangerous place for Obi-Wan. There’s also mention of Kenobi’s personal mission to watch over young Luke Skywalker, which Chow describes as the “starting point” for the narrative. The success of Obi-Wan Kenobi may depend on how the creative team fleshes things out beyond that. Concept art seemed to indicate the show would take viewers across several Star Wars locales, so it doesn’t look like it will all be on Tatooine.

Of course, there’s also some focus on Christensen’s return to the Star Wars franchise. His character is only referred to as Vader in the video, implying Christensen will primarily be in the Sith Lord’s iconic suit during the series. This does raise the question of why Christensen was brought back (other actors were used for Vader in Rogue One), so it will be fascinating to see how his story unfolds. Chow makes a good point that it’d be hard to explore Obi-Wan without integrating Vader, considering how interlinked the two are. The biggest takeaway is concept art confirming Obi-Wan will once again duel with his former apprentice, years before their fateful match in A New Hope. Their confrontation in Revenge of the Sith was one of the prequels’ most epic moments, so it should be thrilling to see the two cross paths again in Obi-Wan Kenobi.
