It appears Death Stranding 2 is in the works, seeing as Norman Reedus is apparently in talks to return to Kojima’s version of post-apocalyptic United States. The original game is a rather divisive title from Hideo Kojima; but Death Stranding performed well commercially despite its strange and otherwise niche premise.
The recent Gamescom 2021 Opening Night livestream revealed a new trailer for Death Stranding Director’s Cut, which was first announced in June. The trailer showed off new story content, as well as new features that will hopefully refine the Death Stranding experience. Although the game was praised for its story, the gameplay was often seen as a point of controversy due to its occasionally tedious mechanics. It’s possible the Death Stranding Director’s Cut will be comparatively smoother, given Kojima has called the follow-up title an expansion rather than a cut. However, there appears to be more than enough content to be added to the game, given recent developments suggest a second Death Stranding is on its way.
In an interview with Vitória Pratini from IGN Brazil, Death Stranding and The Walking Dead actor Norman Reedus suggested he is currently in talks for a sequel to the game. This isn’t the first time he’s suggested a return to Death Stranding, but some chalked it up to him returning for a DLC, which seems to be the case with Death Stranding Director’s Cut on the horizon. As a result, it appears he’s definitely referencing a sequel when he told Pratini the game “is in negotiations right now. So… yay!”
That being said, there is a possibility that Norman Reedus is actually just going to be in another Kojima game. He was meant to be in Silent Hills prior to its cancelation, so he’s no stranger to recurring collaborations with the developer. Additionally, there have been rumblings that Hideo Kojima is working with Xbox on a new cloud-based horror game, seemingly the one that was meant to be made for Google Stadia. Either way, it sounds like Kojima fully intends to include him into whatever he does next.
Kojima said he plans to work on multiple games at once going forward, juggling episodic games (like the horror game) with a full-scale game. With that said, Kojima could potentially work on this untitled horror game while making headway on Death Stranding 2. Although this sounds daunting, Kojima was planning out Silent Hills and made P.T. - all while making Metal Gear Solid V. This certainly isn’t out of character for him, but only time will tell if it actually happens.
