MND Scotland has appointed Rachel Maitland as its chief executive.

Maitland, who has been head of supply and operations for the Edinburgh-based energy company Flexitricity since 2018, will join the motor neurone disease charity in July.

She was also a board member for the non-profit Paws for Progress between 2019 and 2020 and director of the start-up Ask Think Grow, which delivered educational workshops in schools, from 2014 to 2016.

She succeeds Craig Stockton, who left MND Scotland earlier this year to “explore new challenges” after 20 years in the role.

Maitland, who is chair of Forth Valley Rape Crisis Centre, said: “I’m really looking forward to working alongside my new colleagues, our service users and the wider MND community to bring the amazing work of MND Scotland to the forefront of the public’s mind and ensure that, regardless of background or circumstance, anyone and everyone requiring MND information, assistance or support in Scotland can access it readily.”

Adrian Murphy, chair of the charity, said: “This is an extremely exciting time to join MND Scotland’s team and lead the charity’s strategic direction at this pivotal point.

“Over the past 40 years we have come a long way, and that is a true testament to our incredible fundraisers, staff, volunteers and partners, but our fight is not over.

“We are looking to the future, and this gives Rachel the unique opportunity to harness the progress already made and elevate our charity and cause to the next level.”
