Sweet Tooth Stars Reveal Who They’d Want Robert Downey Jr. To Play

Movies

Nonso Anozie and Christian Convery, the stars of Netflix’s Sweet Tooth, consider what roles they’d like producer Robert Downey Jr. to play. After hanging up his Iron Man suit for good following Avengers: Endgame, Downey has shifted his focus towards his producing side. In addition to serving as an executive producer on HBO’s Perry Mason, Downey has helped bring the Vertigo comic Sweet Tooth to the small screen. The series was first primed for Hulu in 2018 before making the jump to Netflix two years later. After a production that was complicated by the coronavirus pandemic, Sweet Tooth finally debuted earlier this month.

Sweet Tooth takes place in the aftermath of “The Great Crumble,” the apocalyptic breakdown of society following a deadly virus. This event led to the rise of hybrids, or children born part-human, part-animal. Sweet Tooth centers on young hybrid Gus (Convery) as he leaves his isolated home in search of his mother. Along the way, Gus partners up with grizzled loner Tommy Jepperd (Anozie), forming a sort of makeshift family as they search for answers in a confusing, dangerous world.

Both Anozie and Convery sat down with ComicBook.com recently to discuss Sweet Tooth, and during their conversation, they were asked the most tantalizing question of all: If they could pick a role on the show for producer Downey, what would it be? Convery was open to the idea, though he admitted he wasn’t sure who Downey could play. “Oh, this is a really tricky question. Maybe it could be a whole other arc of his character?” he said. “I have no idea. There’s endless possibilities of what he could be. That’d be cool though.” Anozie, meanwhile, had some very interesting ideas for a potential Downey role:

“I think if our trio in the film became kind of a foursome and he just joined our band along the way and kind of helped us, and maybe helped us along the way in some way… I think a character that maybe didn’t appear in the comic book, that he could actually come along and play. I actually think he would have made an interesting General Abbott as well, but I feel like Neil Sandilands has done such a great job in that. But if he was to come on, I think he’d have to join our gang, for sure.”

Since exiting the MCU, Downey has laid low when it comes to acting. Last year, he starred in the much-maligned movie Dolittle, and he’s expected to return for the currently-on-hold Sherlock Holmes 3. Beyond that, Downey has several other projects in development, so it’s hard to say if he could ever find time for a role on Sweet Tooth. At the very least, it stands to reason that he could make a quick cameo somewhere. It isn’t outside the realm of possibility; as seen with Margot Robbie and her Hulu series Dollface, big name producers can put in fun, quick appearances in their projects.

Of course, this all hinges on Sweet Tooth getting renewed for season 2. Netflix has yet to make a decision on the comic book series, but that isn’t a bad thing. The streamer is known for waiting a while after a new show debuts before passing judgement. Sweet Tooth has earned glowing reviews from critics and fans, and it currently ranks among Netflix’s Top 10 programs. With Downey’s backing and positive reception, the series just might return for more. Then perhaps Downey can find time in his busy schedule to make an onscreen appearance.
