The Windmill

Clapham, London, England

8
Telegraph expert rating

Located on Clapham Common Southside, The Windmill is a great spot for accessing Central London with Clapham Common and Clapham South tube stations under 10 minutes’ walk (half mile) from the property. Inside, interiors have the feel of a cosy library – with a twist. Enter through the pub to be greeted by a warm fireplace, plush, old leather furniture and often a slew of friendly dogs. The dining area is more polished, with cheery wildlife-themed décor featuring bird and deer motifs, and a sunny conservatory off to the side for breakfast. It’s one of a rare breed of London hotels with free parking – but the 10 on-site spaces are first-come-first-serve.

COMO The Halkin

Belgravia, London, England

9
Telegraph expert rating

The Halkin is in the embassy area of Belgravia, between Belgrave Square and Hyde Park corner: very smart and very quiet. The Halkin first opened in 1991 newly built on the site of a former car park in a modern classical style to blend in with the Belgravia mansions which surround it. Regular refurbishment has kept the hotel smart, but the original look has lasted extremely well – a testament to the strength of the original concept. It also has a Michelin-starred restaurant. London Q-Park Knightsbridge is a five-minute walk from the hotel and costs £55 for 24-hour parking (both valet and self-drive).
