Queen Elizabeth Vanquishes Tasty Foe With Regal Swordplay

Kate Middleton and Camilla Bowles giggle as the cut is made.

Queen Elizabeth protected the Realm against sugary desserts on Friday by personally bisecting a sheet cake with a regal blade.

As part of a busy weekend that involved hosting world leaders for the G7 summit and also celebrating her birthday, The Queen, along with Kate Middleton and Camilla Bowles, visited The Eden Project to meet with volunteer planners of next year’s Platinum Jubilee celebrating the 95-year-old monarch’s 70th year on the throne.

Approaching the delectable baked good — which was likely only pretending to be dead and actually waiting to pounce — Elizabeth grabbed a sword, held it upside-down, and made the kill.

When someone off-camera said that there was a knife available, the ever-aware Queen parried back, “oh, I know there is.” She added, “this is something that is more unusual.”

The Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Cornwall chuckled as she said it, and not only because she was holding a deadly weapon.

The longest-reigning British monarch has, as V.F. has reported, a special relationship with cakes. She has a slice of “a chocolate biscuit cake” each day. But she is never wasteful. “She’ll take a small slice every day until eventually there is only one tiny piece,” former royal chef Darren McGrady says. If she is traveling, a senior chef will accompany the dessert.

Concerning swords, well, the British throne has plenty of history there, too.
