Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker James Gunn has taken to social media to wish four-time Oscar winner Clint Eastwood a happy 91st birthday with a photo taken of the pair. After garnering cult followings for Slither and Super, Gunn stepped into the director’s chair for his first blockbuster production with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy. The 54-year-old writer/director recently began branching out to the world of DC with the upcoming The Suicide Squad and HBO Max spinoff series Peacemaker.
Eastwood first rose to popularity with roles in the western genre with Sergio Leone’s Dollars Trilogy and TV series Rawhide and carried it forward on the big screen with hits including Hang ‘Em High, Coogan’s Bluff, and The Outlaw Josey Wales. He would expand outside the western genre with his directorial debut, Play Misty for Me, and the Dirty Harry franchise. His directorial work would take him to new ground, including his 11 Oscar nominations and four wins for 1993’s Unforgiven and 2005’s Million Dollar Baby.

While some are more looking for the director to share more info about his forthcoming Suicide Squad, Gunn took to Twitter to wish fellow filmmaker Eastwood a happy 91st birthday. Gunn shared a photo taken of him, Eastwood, and producer Peter Safran from the set of an unidentified Eastwood film, where the prolific multi-hyphenate invited Gunn. Check out the photo below:
Whether having worked together in the past or not, it’s always a real treat for fans to see their favorite filmmakers or performers show each other love on social media, and Gunn and Eastwood are no different. It is pretty interesting to see Gunn reveal he was invited to the film’s set, which appears to be Richard Jewell, despite their paths seemingly never having crossed before. Plus, with Peter Safran in the picture, who has worked frequently with Gunn in the past but hasn’t teamed with the four-time Oscar winner yet, it certainly creates a sense of wonder how the meeting came to be.
That being said, Gunn’s comments of Eastwood being a great guy may very well chalk the answer to the mystery up as a genuine curiosity to meet a fellow filmmaker and fan. With the two being busy on their various films, including Eastwood’s adaptation of Cry Macho, which has been in the works with other stars and directors for over 30 years, the two likely won’t be able to reunite any time soon. But for fans who have been itching to see their filmmaking prowesses return, this year will undoubtedly be an exciting one when Cry Macho and The Suicide Squad debut on HBO Max later this year.
