A team of modders is working to turn Valheim into a massively multiplayer online game. The popular Norse-inspired survival sandbox title, developed by Iron Gate Studio, was released as a Steam Early Access title in February 2021. While no official release date has been given, the developer does plan to release new content for the game throughout the entire year.
As an early access game, Valheim will continue to receive an abundance of official support from Iron Gate Studio in the future. The developer recently released Patch 0.150.3, an update which brings a number of meaningful changes to the title. Chief among these additions is a new terrain modification system which is meant to make loading faster and smoother for players. Other small improvements were made as well; for instance, a bug was fixed which spawned enemies inside stone, and the developer decreased the amount of stone necessary to raise ground using the hoe. While this patch is a welcome update, Valheim fans are eagerly looking forward to the game’s Hearth & Home update. As the game’s first big expansion, Hearth & Home is expected to greatly expand upon the game’s house-building system.

PC gaming news site PCGamesN recently reported that a group of modders is working to turn Valheim into a massively multiplayer online game. The project, titled Valheim Large Network Game Object Server Suite or VaLNGOS, is currently in the research phase, but a website has been established to keep followers up-to-date on progress. The group’s goal is to create an open-source implementation of Valheim‘s servers, which would allow more than 1,o00 players to play the game together on a single server. This would be an amazing feat, considering that Valheim currently only supports cooperation between ten players or less. Other planned features, such as a built-in spam filter and a simple modding interface, are listed on the website.
While the VaLNGOS project is extremely ambitious, Valheim has already established a community of dedicated modders. One player recently released the Necromancy Mod, which allows players to raise an army of skeletons to fight beside them. The mod, created by Nexus Mods user flppyflip3, allows players to use a Convoking Wand to raise and command a certified army of darkness. The dark nature of this magic is reflected by the fact that a portion of the player’s health must be sacrificed in order to perform these spells. Another mod for the viking survival game added a 100-star Troll to a player’s world, a terrifying concept considering that Trolls in the base game can only reach a 3-star strength level.
Valheim has captured the hearts and minds of gamers with its interesting Norse aesthetic and fun survival gameplay. Turning this experience into an MMO risks breaking the balance of the game, but it could also make for an extremely fun experience. VaLNGOS is still in the earliest stages of development, so time will tell how successful the development turns out, and what it means for the future of Valheim.
Valheim is available now on PC.
