Potential spoilers for Firefly: Brand New Verse #1 ahead!
The saga of Firefly spanned only fourteen episodes and one feature film, Serenity. However, despite being canceled so prematurely, the show has become a cult hit, inspiring loyalty among fans almost twenty years later. Now, a new limited series from Boom! Studios returns to the world of the Browncoats and Boom! just gave fans a preview of the new limited series - Firefly: Brand New Verse – which introduces some exciting new characters into the mythos.
Created by Joss Whedon, Firefly aired on the FOX Network in the Fall of 2002, but only eleven of the fourteen episodes made it to air. The series found new life when it was released on DVD a year later, and helped generate enough buzz to convince Universal to greenlight a movie based on the show. Serenity debuted in theaters three years after the show premiered and was met with positive reviews and modest box office returns. The franchise would make its way to comics, and several publishers have since created Firefly-based books. Now, Boom! is debuting Brand New Verse, a new limited series from writer Josh Lee Gordon and artist Fabiana Mascolo set 20 years after the events of Serenity.

The preview pages provided spotlight not only the new dynamic onboard Serenity, but three new characters as well. There’s Emma Washburne, the daughter of Zoe (who is now the ship’s captain) and Wash (the ship’s former pilot who was killed in Serenity). Also new to the scene is her lover Lu Bao. The mysterious Salo rounds out the trinity of fresh faces. Absent are many of the classic crew, such as Kaylee or Malcolm Reynolds, although the latter appears on one of the variant covers; no information is given on where they are, or even if they are still alive.
Firefly’s initial run was cut severely short by the network, and that, coupled with its explosion in popularity in the subsequent years, has made Firefly one of the greatest “what could have beens” in television history. Fans were hopeful the story would continue beyond the Serenity film, but the less-than-stellar box office dashed those hopes. The story continued in comics, but most of them were set in the same timeframe of the show and movie, but now Boom! has moved the story forward twenty years, giving readers a fresh new look at the Serenity and her crew.
Boom! Studios is finally giving fans of Firefly what they have been craving: new stories set in one of the most intriguing and richest ‘verses in existence. Firefly: Brand New Verse is written by Josh Lee Gordon with art by Fabiana Mascolo and will be available in stores and on all digital comics platforms March 24.
