Brandon Maxwell has quite the resume, from designing for Michelle Obama to Lady Gaga to his designs draping the bodies of Meghan Markle, Regina King, Anne Hathaway, and more. But before he was a purveyor of high-end fashion, he spent much of his childhood shopping for goods in Walmart. Today, Maxwell becomes the creative director of Walmart, the first in the retailer’s history.

“Growing up, my friends and I would go to Walmart a lot. And I still go to Walmart several times a week,” Maxwell told WWD. “So I feel like I know the customer quite well, the customer is my friends and family, the customer is me.” In his new role, Maxwell will take the helm of Walmart Inc’s in-house fashion brands Free Assembly and Scoop to design accessories and collections for women, men, and children. Maxwell will also oversee marketing campaigns. He will unveil his debut collection in spring 2022.

Though he designs for the creme de la creme of Hollywood, Maxwell says this partnership will allow him to bring two worlds together.

“Closing the gap between the world that I’ve come to know and the world that I come from has long been a dream of mine, and to be able to do it at the store that served so many of my needs growing up is all the more special,” he wrote on Instagram.

In tandem with the announcement of Maxwell’s new role, Walmart and the luxury designer are releasing face masks (designed by Maxwell, of course) and have made a $100,000 donation to donorschoose.org, a charity dedicated to ensuring resources and funding for teachers.
