The Russo brothers support the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League and say they’ll be watching along with everyone else. Though they got their start in television, Joe and Anthony Russo are best known for their work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially as the directors behind Avengers: Endgame. Zack Snyder’s Justice League, also known as the long-awaited Snyder Cut, is available on HBO Max as of today.
The behind-the-scenes production troubles of 2017’s Justice League are well publicized: executives at Warner Bros. were pushing against Snyder’s creative vision for both the film and the larger DC Extended Universe, and, motivated by a sudden family tragedy, he chose to leave the project rather than expend the energy required to push back. The studio brought in Joss Whedon to completely retool the movie, and the result was a critically panned box-office bomb dogged by allegations of Whedon’s toxic behavior that continue to make headlines. Fans spent the next few years clamoring to see Snyder’s vision realized, and with today’s release of the 4-hour epic officially called Zack Snyder’s Justice League, their dreams have finally come true.

While they represent the ‘enemy’ over at Marvel Studios, Snyder’s experience is one every Hollywood director can sympathize with and the Russo brothers took to Twitter to share their support. Retweeting the start time for the Snyder Cut’s official Red Carpet Event, they congratulated their fellow “superhero junkie” on getting to make his passion project and let him know they’ll be watching. Judging by the responses, it appears both MCU and DCEU fans appreciate the solidarity across franchises.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is strikingly different from the 2017 version, and not just because it’s twice as long. The cast of characters has been radically expanded to include previously unseen heroes and villains such as Martian Manhunter and Darkseid, while also bringing back some from previous DCEU movies, most notably Jared Leto as the Joker. With a complete visual overhaul in terms of both style and design, plus a reworking of the CGI, even some characters that featured heavily in Whedon’s version will seem completely different.
Critics got an early look at Zack Snyder’s Justice League (always a good sign), and while not a slam-dunk masterpiece, the largely positive consensus points to a major improvement over the previous version. According to both those that liked it and those that didn’t, this film is identifiably Snyder’s, filled to the brim with his interests and idiosyncrasies. For the fans that campaigned for years and (shockingly) succeeded in getting a Hollywood studio to hand the keys back to a director they’d moved on from, that’s all they wanted to hear.
