The best budget Tenerife hotels, from activity-packed beach resorts to countryside fincas

Destinations

These are unusual times, and the state of affairs can change quickly. Please check the latest guidance before travelling. Our writer visited these hotels prior to the pandemic.

Although the majority of new hotels to have popped up on Tenerife in recent years have been of the five-star variety, the island still offers a swarm of accommodation choices for the more wallet-conscious. But, unlike in years gone by, cheap accommodation in Tenerife doesn’t necessarily mean a sacrifice on luxury, with many offering top-notch dining, plumped-up pillows, and views to match their flashier city, rural or beachfront neighbours. Here’s our pick of the best budget hotels in Tenerife for under £120 a night, including the top places to stay with beach access, sea views, delicious dining, spas, tennis courts, gyms and fabulous swimming pools, in Costa Adeje, Santa Cruz, Puerto de la Cruz, Los Cristianos and Garachico.

Barceló Tenerife

Tenerife, Spain

8
Telegraph expert rating

This unpretentious, all-inclusive coastal resort is positioned five minutes on foot from the fairways and British residential enclave of Golf del Sur, and the same distance from the cosy fishing village of Los Abrigos. Apart from the eight pools, mini-lake for kayaking, modest sand and pebble beach, spa, sports centre, kids’ club and six bars and restaurants, the highlight is an in-house environmental tour taking in a neighbouring nature reserve and an innovative ‘experience’ tunnel. This cluster of terracotta-toned buildings manage to mingle rustic Mexican hacienda with contemporary Canarian style.

Occidental Santa Cruz Contemporáneo

Santa Cruz, Spain

8
Telegraph expert rating

This is considered one of the best ‘chic and cheap’ hotels in Tenerife – with breathlessly contemporary interiors, it’s a shining star in Santa Cruz, Tenerife’s oft-overlooked capital. The wide range of smart rooms starts with Standard doubles, with the option to upgrade to slightly larger Triples and Superiors. Four people can squeeze into a Superior Family Room. Some of the latter boast balconies overlooking Santa Cruz’s Rambla or seafront, all feature crisp new linen, firm mattresses and air-conditioning. Style and prices aside, the hotel’s USP is a rooftop lounge and swimming pool that offers sun-drenched views across the city.

Colón Guanahaní

Tenerife, Spain

7
Telegraph expert rating

This serene, adults-only hotel is an oasis of serenity next to the shops and restaurants of Fañabe, a busy tourist zone within Costa Adeje. Although it bills itself as for 16s and overs, you may find that the tranquil and intimate ambience is more favoured by those over 50. A courtyard fountain provides a Zen soundtrack and the general pace within the hotel appears to be set at ‘slow motion’. There are two daytime congregational hubs; the two adjacent heated outdoor pools, and a rooftop plunge pool and sundeck that overlooks the ocean. There’s also a small spa area and a gym. The 154 good-sized rooms and suites have pastel-blue wood panelling and pool-view balconies.

Hotel Rural Finca Salamanca

Tenerife, Spain

7
Telegraph expert rating

An immaculately converted and maintained country estate which began life as a sugar cane plantation around 150 years ago and is now in the hands of the sixth generation of the family. Today it’s mainly avocado trees with a smattering of tropical fruits and splendid botanical gardens which complement the rural hotel. Built in hacienda style using locally sourced volcanic stone and tea wood, there are patios, terraces, an elegant swimming pool, and quiet nooks aplenty dotted around the bounteous grounds and gardens. With nightlife not running to anything more than stargazing and a game of bridge, this is the perfect de-stress getaway.

Hotel Rural El Patio

Tenerife, Spain

7
Telegraph expert rating

A peaceful and elegant rural retreat in an historic and protected Canarian mansion set around a beautiful courtyard, close to the picturesque village of Garachico. El Patio is a protected 16th-century manor house which has been in the hands of the Ponte family since 1507. Extensive gardens include a swimming pool and solarium, and the hotel’s crowning glory, its elegant courtyard with fountain and cascading hedge of bougainvillea. Evenings spent here, beneath a starry sky and canopy of palm trees planted by the owner’s grandmother in 1902, epitomise colonial living. The sunny dining room has panoramic views over the banana trees to the ocean.

Hotel La Casona del Patio

Tenerife, Spain

8
Telegraph expert rating

This characterful boutique hotel is situated on the edge of picturesque Santiago del Teide, a sleepy, rural village from which the serpentine drive to Masca begins. The hotel is in the grounds of the 17th-century Casa del Patio manor house, formerly home to the Lord of Santiago, which has been beautifully converted into a tasca, restaurant, small museum and riding stables. There’s also a small gym and spa. Interiors have a very contemporary design in volcanic stone and wood, while incorporating elements of traditional architecture such as a wooden vaulted ceiling, vermilion feature walls and stone floors. The 20 double bedrooms all reflect the same rustic chic style.
