BBC Children in Need issues updated fundraising total

Charity

This years BBC Children in Need appeal has raised an additional £4m since announcing its on-the-night result, taking the total amount to more than £41m.

The charity said over the weekend that this year’s event, which culminated in a three-hour show broadcast on Friday evening, had raised just over £37m by the end of the night

This was more than £10m down on the previous year’s figure as a shortened broadcast and coronavirus restrictions appeared to have affected people’s ability to raise funds.

The charity usually does not issue any further fundraising updates until the final figures are announced several months after the annual event, but said yesterday that an extra £4m had been raised since Friday night.

The updated total for the fundraiser, which this year marks its 40th anniversary, included almost £5.4m from the One Show’s Rickshaw Challenge and more than £2.5m from Joe Wicks’ PE Challenge.

Simon Antrobus, chief executive of BBC Children in Need, said: “Friday was an incredibly special night for BBC Children in Need – it was an evening full of kindness, hope and generosity, which will go on to help children and young people across the UK at a time when they need us most.

“We are absolutely overwhelmed with the total raised so far and cannot thank our remarkable supporters [enough] for once again coming together to help make a difference.”
