Government offers £2m of match-funding for overseas schemes

Charities working in developing countries are being encouraged to apply to take part in a £2m government aid initiative that will match-fund public donations.

The UK Aid Match scheme aims to help developing countries combat Covid-19, end preventable deaths through tackling malnutrition or malaria, and help girls access quality education.

Run by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, it will match public donations pound for pound over a three-month period, up to a total of £2m.

Over the past five years, UK Aid Match has provided support to 111 charities with projects in 36 countries, reaching more than 25 million of the world’s poorest people, the FCDO said.

Proposed projects must be in countries ranked in either the lowest 50 places in the Human Development Index or in certain countries the UK government considers to be of high or moderate fragility.

The foreign office minister Baroness Liz Sugg said the focus of the fund would be to help tackle the global challenges that had become more acute during the pandemic.

“UK Aid Match gives the British people the chance to double the impact of their donations to charities doing great work around the world,” she said.
