Sight loss charities change their names

The sight loss charity Royal Blind has changed its name to Sight Scotland

The 227-year-old organisation, which is based in Edinburgh, said its sister charity Scottish War Blinded had also changed its name, to Sight Scotland Veterans

The charities said the name changes coincided with it embarking on new plans to reach significantly more people with visual impairment in Scotland through an expansion of its services.

They said research over the past year among service users, health and social care professonals, people living with sight loss and the wider public showed the name Royal Blind was being confused with other charities with similar names.

It also showed the word “blind” no longer covered all the people the charities could support.

The charities said they considered having the term “sight loss” in the new names, but decided they wanted them to be positive and not use the word “loss”.

The new brands, which were designed by the agency Fabrik, have been launched to coincide with World Sight Day today

Mark O’Donnell, chief executive of the charities, said: “We are determined that no one should face sight loss alone and that’s why we have set the ambitious target of reaching as many people as possible who need us.

“As Sight Scotland and Sight Scotland Veterans, we are a better position to achieve this. Our new names and identity will help us to stand out and clearly communicate who we are and what we do.”
