Eyebrows raised after chair of regulator is again unavailable for questions after speech

The chair of the Charity Commission will again not be taking any questions after she delivers a keynote speech – this time, at the Charity Law Association Annual Conference.

It comes just days after Baroness Stowell was criticised for being unavailable for questions after her talk at the regulator’s annual public meeting last week.

The CLA confirmed that Stowell would not be available for questions after giving her talk at its 26th annual conference today.

One charity leader, who asked not to be named, questioned whether she was seeking to avoid public scrutiny.

Despite the earlier criticism, Stowell used her speech at the commission’s annual public meeting to call for greater accountability and transparency across the sector.

The Directory of Social Change then launched a scathing attack on the commission’s virtual event.

In a blog post, Jay Kennedy, director of policy and research at the training and publishing charity, said the commission was uninterested in examining its own performance and wanted to put its failings back onto charities.

The regulator said in response that it was not afraid to set high standards for itself and be held accountable.

Kennedy also accused the commission’s leadership of being unable to accept the laws and regulations it was supposed to explain and enforce.
