Charities are being invited to apply for grants from the Morrisons Foundation as the charity marks its fifth anniversary.

The charity, which is funded by the Morrisons supermarket chain, said it had given out £30m in grants to more than 2,500 GB charities since its launch in 2015.

The grant-maker said it was encouraging local charities to visit its website to find out more about applying for grants of up to £25,000 towards projects that help their communities.

But it added that it put an emphasis on smaller amounts so it could support as many charities as possible.

The average grant size given out by the foundation since the £25,000 cap was implemented in August last year is about £9,000.

The charity’s income from the company is derived from a variety of areas, including clothing banks, scratch cards and parking fines.

Charities to have received funding from the foundation include Crisis, Hope for Justice, Shelter Scotland and The National Literacy Trust.

The foundation also provides match-funding for sums raised by Morrisons’ staff for their chosen charities.

David Scott, a trustee of the foundation, said: “I’m immensely proud that we have been able to donate ten of millions of pounds to worthwhile charities throughout Great Britain.

“In the past five years we have been able to support charity projects that have made a big difference in their communities from providing care to the elderly, people with complex needs [and] children in schools by donating books on World Book Day in partnership with The National Literacy Trust.”

The foundation also created a homeless support fund that gave out more than £500,000 to almost 100 charities in 12 weeks earlier in the Covid-19 pandemic.
