The Powerpuff Girls Are Getting the Live-Action Treatment

Style

Before there were myriad Marvel, DC, and X-Men superhero franchises, there was the sugar, spice, and everything nice of the incomparable Powerpuff Girls. Now, multiple outlets are reporting that the hit Cartoon Network animated series is getting a live-action reboot at The CW. It will reportedly follow superhero sisters Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as they navigate their twenties in Townsville. Ahead, everything we know about the new series, including which Oscar-winning writer is penning the project.

The live-action Powerpuff Girls will follow the trio as twenty-somethings.

The original Powerpuff Girls animated series, created by Craig McCracken, followed kindergarteners Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as they fought crime in the fictional Townsville. This trio’s powers were bestowed upon them by their father, a scientist named Professor Utonium as an accident: Chemical X was added to the “sugar, spice, and everything nice” concoction, granting them powerful abilities.

The live-action Powerpuff Girls will follow the siblings into adulthood, exploring the baggage they’ve accumulated from all those years fighting bad guys in elementary school. A synopsis of the show, via The Hollywood Reporter, reads:

Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup used to be America’s pint-sized superheroes. Now, they’re disillusioned twenty-somethings who resent having lost their childhoods to crimefighting. When the world needs them more than ever, will they agree to reunite?

Veronica Mars writer Heather Regnier and Oscar-winning Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody are writing the show, alongside producer Greg Berlanti (Love, Simon and Supergirl). All three will executive produce the series with Sarah Schechter and David Madden of Berlanti Productions.

This isn’t the first reboot.

Although a live-action version of The Powerpuff Girls has never been made before, this isn’t the show’s first reboot. The original animated series aired from 1998-2005 and received its own movie in 2002. Then, a decade later, a 2016 animated reboot aired on the Cartoon Network. That iteration ran for three seasons and stars Amanda Leighton, Kristen Li, and Natalie Palamides in the lead roles. McCracken is also involved with the animated reboot, although THR reports he’s not part of the live-action version just yet.

No further information is available just yet.

Since the series is still in the works, there’s no casting information or a release date available. Until then, you can watch both the OG Powerpuff Girls and its 2016 re-imagining on Hulu.
