The former chief executive of Sheffield City Council has been unveiled as the next England chair of the National Lottery Community Fund.

John Mothersole, who took up the role in May, succeeded Nat Sloane in chairing the panel that advises how National Lottery funding is used in England.

imageMothersole, left, who retired in December after 11 years at the helm of Sheffield council, has been a member of the NLCF England Committee since February 2018.

He has held senior local government posts in cities across the UK, including London.

The NLCF has also this week announced the appointment of Kate Still as chair of its Scotland Committee.

Still, who was previously director for Scotland at the Prince’s Trust, succeeded Maureen McGinn on 15 June.

She has been chair of Employment Support Scotland and a fellow of the Institute of Employability.

Mothersole and McGinn will both earn £24,000 a year for the roles.

Mothersole said: “I come to this role with a strong sense of both the responsibility and of what I can give in terms of my own long experience working with communities and helping to make the right things happen. My emphasis will always be on impact and sustainability, and the fund is especially well placed in delivering that.”

Still said: “I look forward to supporting people to tackle the issues that matter most to them, to improve lives and build stronger communities that put people in the lead.”

Dawn Austwick, chief executive of the NLCF, said: “With more than a decade of experience leading Sheffield Council, and even longer spent in local authorities across the UK, John has seen first-hand that when people are in the lead communities thrive.”

Austwick said that, with Still’s “expertise in employment and skills, she knows that people understand, better than anyone, what’s needed in their communities”.

The new chairs will also sit on the fund’s overall board, which is made up of each of the four country committee chairs.
