The London Marathon Charitable Trust has awarded more than £2.2m in new grants to 20 organisations that help people access physical activity across the UK.
The biggest grant, of £1m, went to the disability sport charity the Activity Alliance, which will use the funds to encourage 4,000 inactive children and young people to take part in fun activities, principally in Sunderland, the Black Country and the London borough of Haringey.
The money comes from the grant-maker’s Strategic Partnership Grants programme, which works with organisations on projects that challenge inequality of access to physical activity.
The remaining 19 organisations to receive funding are a mix of charities, sports clubs and local authorities.
They include: the Haven House Foundation, which will be given £104,000 to create a fully accessible play area and sensory garden for children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions; the Black Prince Community Trust, which runs a community hub of the same name in Lambeth, south London, and will receive £20,000 towards improving its female and disabled changing facilities; and the National Youth Theatre of Great Britain, which has been awarded £150,000 for a new studio with a specific focus on physical activity.
The next deadline for funding applications for the next £7.8m that has been made available under the programme is 11 March.
