More than 200 jobs protected as charity project finds new home

More than 200 jobs have been saved after a Scottish disability charity secured a new “state-of-the-art” site for a project that supports people with complex needs.

Capability Scotland announced it is to move to a location in Glover Street after coming to an agreement with Perth and Kinross Council.

The move allows the continuation of the charity’s Our Inclusive Community Project, which supports about 100 people, and would “safeguard more than 200 jobs”, the charity said.

Capability Scotland is moving from its Upper Springland site due to the facility being “obsolete” with an ongoing risk of flooding, the charity said.

The charity previously scrapped plans to move to a site in Bertha Park due to increased costs and logistical challenges.

Brian Logan, chief executive of Capability Scotland, said: “This is a positive and progressive decision by Perth and Kinross Council and we wholeheartedly welcome it.

“This location offers an opportunity for long-term sustainability and integration and will allow us to deliver a modern, inclusive community for people with complex needs.

“Now we are in a strong position to move forward at pace and, although we have much work to do, our hope is that we can deliver the new community by 2028.”

The charity said it would draw up an agreement with the council to finalise the move.

Initial work has been undertaken with the council and third-party specialists to assess and mitigate any potential flood risks at the new site.

“Our priority has been to secure a location that ensures long-term safety, accessibility and quality of life for everyone we support, their families, our staff and the wider community,” Logan added.

Grant Laing, leader of Perth and Kinross Council, said: “This is about protecting what matters most – people, relationships and the support networks that help individuals thrive.

“For many of Capability Scotland’s residents and staff, Perth isn’t just a location – it’s home.

“Their lives are rooted here, and this proposal ensures they can remain part of the community they know and trust.”
