Why Selena Gomez Skipped the 2021 MTV VMAs

Selena Gomez opted not to spend her Sunday night at the MTV VMAs in Brooklyn this year. The singer, who has a nomination with Blackpink for “Ice Cream” in the Best K-Pop Song category, was absent from the red carpet. She was photographed with friends instead today and snapped leaving New York City earlier this week.

It’s understandable why Gomez skipped the show: Gomez and Blackpink (who are South Korea-based) were nominated in just one category. Gomez hasn’t attended the VMAs since 2015.

Gomez is not attending the 2021 Met Gala tomorrow either.

Gomez spoke to ELLE in its September 2021 issue about her thoughts on her music career going forward as she pursues acting more. “I don’t think I’ll ever quit making music,” she said, adding that she does still feel like she’s constantly trying to prove herself though. “I’m not saying I want a Grammy. I just feel like I’m doing the best I can, and it’s all about me. Sometimes, that can really get to me.”

Music is more personal than acting, she added: “You’re pouring yourself out.”

She also discussed her 2017 decision to give up control of her social media accounts and keep it off her phone. Her assistant runs the accounts for her, and Gomez provides photos and quotes for them. “I don’t have it [Instagram] on my phone, so there’s no temptation,” she said. “I suddenly had to learn how to be with myself. That was annoying, because in the past, I could spend hours looking at other people’s lives. I would find myself down nearly two years in someone’s feed, and then I’d realize, ‘I don’t even know this person!’ Now I get information the proper way. When my friends have something to talk about, they call me and say, ‘Oh, I did this.’ They don’t say, ‘Wait, did you see my post?’”
