Pokémon-Like Game Palworld Promises Survival Crafting & Guns

Movies

Developer Pocketpair, Inc. has announced a new title called Palworld, which promises a Pokémon-style adventure with survival crafting elements and, surprisingly enough, firearms. The developer is known for its other bizarre title Craftopia, an early access game which blends elements of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with a staggering array of crafting elements.

The Pokémon franchise is known for the bright, colorful creatures which inhabit its settings and lend it its name. These lovable beasts have sparked joy in millions of fans worldwide and moved a staggering amount of merchandise. The broad appeal of the hundreds of different pocket monsters in the franchise have led Pokémon to celebrate its most profitable year ever in 2020.

This success is not without imitators, though. On June 5th, Pocketpair announced Palworld, a very familiar-looking game about collecting and capturing mystical creatures. While the titular Pals will certainly strike a chord with fans of the Pokémon franchise, Palworld is taking its creatures in directions Nintendo likely never dreamed of. Hunting, eating, and even poaching rare Pals are options in the game, which features survival elements in lieu of Pokémon‘s turn-based RPG roots. The crafting elements are robust, and include firearms, which can be used to engage in firefights with human enemies in the game. These weapons can be crafted with the help of Pals, with all the dubious ethics that implies; one particularly jarring clip on the game’s Steam page shows a line of whimsical squirrel-like Pals working on a conveyor belt to produce assault rifles.
