Almost three-quarters of people in Britain say they will make a charitable donation this Christmas, according to new research.

Survey data from almost 140,000 people collated by the insurance company Ecclesiastical indicates that 72 per cent of those polled said they would make a gift to charity over the festive period.

It showed that 84 per cent of respondents said they thought charitable giving was more important at this time than in previous years.

The most popular cause areas were animals and wildlife, health, and community, the research showed.

The figures were released as part of Ecclesiastical’s 12 Days of Giving Christmas campaign, which asks people to nominate a charity to receive a £1,000 donation.

A total of 120 charities will each receive the sum during the course of the event, with 10 winners being announced each weekday between 7 and 22 December.

Winners will be picked at random, but the more nominations charities receive from the public, the greater their chance of being selected.

Almost 4,000 good causes have already been put forward.
