The Highs and Lows of the 2020 Emmys

Pop Culture

“I don’t know where we will do this or how we will do this or even why we are doing this,” Jimmy Kimmel said when he was announced as the host of this year’s Emmy Awards. “But we are doing it, and I am hosting it.” As it turned out, both that mystery and any understandable questions about the purpose of awards shows were resolved with a surprisingly successful broadcast on Sunday night, featuring exciting wins for the likes of Zendaya and Jeremy Strong, a full-on coronation for the cast of Schitt’s Creek, and a hazmat suit made more memorable by a tweet than anything on the actual broadcast.

On this week’s Little Gold Men podcast, Hillary Busis, Richard Lawson, Katey Rich, Joanna Robinson, and Sonia Saraiya discuss the good and the bad of the Emmy Awards, from the confusing mask-wearing at the Schitt’s Creek party in Toronto to what it means that two of the top prizes went to shows about rich white families. Sonia, Richard, and Joanna all wrote about the awards as well, so read Sonia’s review of the entire show, Joanna on the redemption brought by Watchmen’s limited-series win, and Richard on what the Oscars might be able to learn from this broadcast.
