Star Wars: Huge Things Cut From Film Says Rise of Skywalker Star

Movies

Greg Grunberg teases there were a lot of big moments cut from the theatrical release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Grunberg has been friends with Rise of Skywalker director JJ Abrams since they were children. He’s also appeared in everything Abrams has directed from Felicity to The Force Awakens. The actor plays Snap Wexley, a Resistance pilot introduced in The Force Awakens, but was curiously absent from The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was poorly received by most fans and critics who felt the story had a lot of holes and too many convenient moments. Before the film’s release, fans were excited for Abrams to return to the franchise. The director departed after The Force Awakens, and Rian Johnson stepped in to write and direct the second film in the new trilogy. However, The Last Jedi was also disliked by fans, although for entirely different reasons. So when Abrams returned to helm The Rise of Skywalker, fans were hopeful that it would, at least, be as well-received as his first foray into the Star Wars universe. The finished film left much to be desired; it was littered with plot holes that weren’t clear until months later when the novelization of the film was released.

In a long and detailed interview with THR, Grunberg hints at some significant scenes being left on the cutting room floor and is hopeful some of them are eventually released to fans. “I’m excited to see the DVD extras,” Grunberg says, ”because there are some amazing moments that I have that I can’t wait to see.” He mentions that it was especially hard for him to see some of his scenes left out of the film’s theatrical release before teasing even more significant edits to the film. “There are so many other things — and huge things — that I think people are going to appreciate when they look at it,” he hints.

Based on the novelization alone, we know there are a ton of plot points that were only hinted at (or altogether absent) in the final film. Grunberg’s comments imply that there was also additional material shot, but ultimately edited out of the movie. Grunberg’s remarks don’t clarify which scenes were shot, so there’s no telling which ones might end up in the extras when the film is finally released on home video.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker may not have been everything fans had hoped, but it was certainly entertaining. The conclusion to the “Skywalker Saga” didn’t satisfy everyone, but it did leave fans hungry for more stories. While the novelization has clarified some of the more confusing moments, like the Emperor’s new clone, it would be nice to see some of the cut scenes Grunberg refers to as “huge.” Hopefully, some of those scenes pop up eventually, so fans can see for themselves what could have been.
